TDT's premiere event, LACE, (May of 2003) garnered a financial award from The Puffin Foundation which supported the production of our first New York City evening length concert. TDT has since grown to pioneer the Brooklyn Dance Sampler, showcasing the work of over 75 schools, groups, and companies, and GATHER, our annual art auction and fundraiser. We continue to receive public and private financial support from donors, arts councils, and foundations located in New York City and North Carolina as well as to produce annual repertory showcases. Active and originally founded in Durham, NC TDT has been described by critic Byron Woods as "impressive" and "evocative". Woods listed Artistic Director Amy Beth Schneider's collaborative work with Caroline Williford in his Best of 2004 in his annual review of the state of the arts in Durham. He wrote recently of Schneider's work:
"The largely internal, all-but-seamless scuttlings and striated negotiations between characters on silent sea-bed floors are unarguably Schneider's greatest achievement as a choreographer."
Schneider is an alumnus of Choreo Collective (www.choreocollective.org), where she had the opportunity to work with several North Carolina based choreographers as well as to learn the essence of collaboration and production in her post college years. The Brooklyn Dance Sampler was recently featured in the Brooklyn Eagle by Carrie Stern, and recognized as a showcase for choreographers to amplify their stage experiences while audiences encounter new talent. Stern acknowledged the Samplers contribution to an ever challenging artistic climate, "As the cost of producing dance spirals ever upward, mixed bills, some sponsored by local institutions, others once-a-year showcases run by individual producers, become increasingly important."
